Pairs well with: Miso ramen

As butter meets a bowl of hot ramen, it melts slowly — releasing a rich aroma that rises with the steam. In that moment, an ordinary bowl becomes something a little more special.

Butter corn is one of the most beloved ramen toppings in Japan — a combination of rich, savory butter and the natural sweetness of corn that has long earned its place as a classic. It pairs particularly well with miso ramen: the toasty depth of miso, the lushness of butter, and the bright sweetness of corn layer together in a way that keeps every spoonful interesting.

Part of the pleasure is watching the butter dissolve gradually into the broth. Stir it in little by little, and the flavor shifts with each bite. Scoop up corn-soaked broth with a renge, or let the kernels catch between the noodles — this topping has a way of making the whole bowl more engaging. It is a favorite with children and adults alike: the corn draws in younger eaters, while the butter's aroma and depth appeal to everyone at the table.

Despite how satisfying it is, butter corn takes only a few minutes to prepare. One pan, a handful of ingredients, and a simple sauté — that is all it takes to bring a ramen shop quality to a bowl at home.

This recipe is part of our Ramen Topping series — a collection of homemade toppings that transform any bowl of ramen, including instant noodles, into a restaurant-quality experience. Each topping works beautifully on its own, and the more you layer, the more satisfying the bowl becomes.

Ingredients (Serves 2)

  • Corn 2.8–3.5 oz / 80–100 g
  • Butter 0.35–0.5 oz / 10–15 g
  • Salt A pinch
  • Black pepper A pinch
  • Soy sauce to taste, optional

Instructions

1Melt butter in a frying pan over medium heat. Add the corn and sauté lightly until the butter coats each kernel and a slight gloss appears.

Tips
  • Canned or frozen corn both work well.
  • For extra sweetness, let the corn sit undisturbed for a moment to lightly char on one side before stirring.
2Season with salt and pepper. If desired, add a small splash of soy sauce.

Tips
  • If adding soy sauce, let it sizzle briefly against the hot pan before stirring it into the corn — this creates a pleasant, toasty aroma.
  • For a child-friendly version, omit the pepper.
3Spoon generously over hot ramen. For extra richness, add a small knob of butter on top just before serving.

Tip
Butter corn pairs especially well with miso ramen. As the butter melts into the broth, stir it in gradually to enjoy how the flavor deepens with each bite.
